What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
In many cultures, children are told they can achieve their dreams if they work hard enough. While this belief can have benefits, it still has many limitations.
To start with, it is noticeable that we need to work hard and experience as much as possible since we were young. From every milestone of our lives, hard work is an indispensable factor. With that belief imprinted in our minds, instinctively we can put more effort in the process to reach our goals. To illustrate, In many educational institutions, it is not very difficult to see lots of students raise their hands and answer the teacher's questions to attain compliments and validation from both their teacher and parents. By studying and working constantly, they can shape their self-discipline which is appreciated by many employers and companies in their future work life.
On the other hand, besides its benefits, this phenomenon can lead to a serious disadvantage. Some people nowadays, especially young people, tend to work to satisfy their parents' wishes or without any goals or ambitions. A typical example is Asian families, especially in China and Korea. From an early age in life, children have been made to believe that the only way to succeed is to attend university. Therefore, with a fear of failure and parents' prejudices, many young people have spent most of their lives buried in books and schools, which made them have to sacrifice their relationships, childhood, or even their well-being. As a result, this issue leads to the number of young people who suffer stress, and depression, increasing dramatically over the years.
In conclusion, working hard can bring us many benefits, however, it also can cause many severe issues. Therefore, instead of concentrating mostly on working and studying, we have to ensure our well-being and mental illness by keeping a good balance between life and work.
