In contemporary society, the enchantment of media and sports stars has created a growing trend in which the young are filled with admiration for those famous figures, even though they are not always good role models to follow. From my perspective, this rising phenomenon may be detrimental for certain reasons, which will be elucidated further in the following essay.
One concerning issue that can arise from young people idolizing celebrities is that they may become victims of materialism. Some renowned individuals have a tendency to showcase their luxurious lifestyles with extravagant vacations or designer clothes through social media. When exposed to articles and posts depicting the glamor of those figures’ lives at an impressionable age, the young’s mindset can be affected negatively to pursue materialistic, superficial values instead of treasuring other deeper, meaningful connections of life. This, in the long run, may lead to decreased life satisfaction when they constantly have to chase fame and fortune while lacking relationships to turn to in times of crisis.
Another deleterious effect of excessive reverence for media and sports stars is the possibility of a decline in moral standards among young people, contributed by shocking scandals of their idols. The former professional road racing cyclist Lance Armstrong perfectly exemplifies this as he was revealed to have used performance-enhancing drugs so as to achieve victory throughout his prime. Not only does this undermine the integrity and fairness in sports but also promotes a win-at-all-costs attitude. Without proper perceptions, the young may absorb this mindset and become indifferent to dishonorable tactics.
In conclusion, the admiration for celebrities in the media and sports field can bring about undesirable consequences if adolescents blindly follow those influential individuals without fully acknowledging their notoriety.
