The government should indeed punish traffic violators to decrease the level of traffic accidents. While some people believe that improving road safety would be more efficient, I would agree with those who think that other measures could be used to enhance citizens’ driving habits.
On the one hand, strict punishments from the government might make people focus more on how they drive, and then the level of traffic accidents could be limited. For instance, in Vietnam, commuters should drive a car within only 50 km per hour because if they exceed the speed limit, the traffic police might make a record and fine them a significant amount of money. Besides, if that case leads to a traffic accident, the driver even needs to address being in prison for a long period. It is no doubt to say that no one is willing to become an offender so obeying the traffic law might be a necessary thing.
On the other hand, there are various ways that the government should act to keep driving safe, except by punishing drivers. To begin with, the government should encourage citizens to use public transport, meaning fewer people would need to travel by car. Additionally, traffic signals should be shown wisely, and road project has to be paid attention in terms of design, so drivers can easily recognize the correct signal and stay in the right lane.
In conclusion, while punishments could help to prevent bad driving, I believe that other road safety measures should also be introduced.
