The charts below show the percentage of students from 14 to 16 years old in different genders who studied an external language and the three languages namely French, German and Spanish which are the most popular in an English speaking country from 1984 to 2007.
Overall, the data for students learning foreign language in both genders witnessed a downward trend in the given period.In spite of slight increase of Spanish, French and German steep decreased.
Girls who had another language besides English comprised nearly a half in 1984. However, after 23 years, this figure moderately went down about 8%. Similarly to the data for male students which represented approximately 30% in 1984 the slightly declined to 25% in 2007. Additionally, in the given period, girls always had a higher percentage than boys.
French, German and Spanish are the top 3 languages chosen by students. Of these languages only Spanish had ríing proportion from more or less 5% to almost 10% in the given period. Despite a remarkable reduction from 50% to more than 20%, French still occupied the top spot. Furthermore, the percentage of students who learned German also reduced by about 10% in the 23 years period.
