To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In recent years, whether the benefits of the universality of English will surpass its drawbacks. From my standpoint, I completely concur with the idea. Discussed below are several reasons supporting my perspective.
Although it can be argued that English’s widespread use poses a threat to the preservation of other languages and civilizations, particularly those in ethnic minority regions, thereby causing the loss of cultural heritage and identity, English’s prevalence nonetheless brings about benefits in abundance in a sheer volume. One of the cogent reasons why I believe the idea is because it promotes effective communication. More specifically, as the lingua franca, English eradicates language barriers, which used to be a previous challenge for people from various countries, helping foster communication effectiveness. Therefore, it acts as a precursor in international business and diplomacy.
An additional argument in favor of English’s proliferation would be that it enhances the understanding concerning science and technology. This means that when students navigate the English language, they can acquire and comprehend the update information and knowledge of science and technology, largely written in this language. For example, medical university students who are proficient in English can broaden their horizons through a variety of specialized coursebooks or learning materials which are compiled in English. Furthermore, they have in-depth discussions with other international students in their domain by using the powerful language. As a result, they not only have the opportunity to discuss healthcare or medication-related problems with others, but also grasp the relevant knowledge.
In conclusion, I totally agree that English’s advantage although disadvantageous to other languages and civilizations in ethnic minority regions and people who cannot speak or access English, result in far more benefits due to the aforementioned arguments.
