One of the most pressing problems that global is facing these days is smoking. This condition occurs day to day and causes numerous serious issues for the government and individuals. What should we do to handle this issue? Some people argue that increasing the cost of cigarettes is the best way to relieve smoking. I completely agree with this opinion.
The first reason why I agree with the idea of raising the prices of tobacco is that it helps enhance the quality of people’s health. Everyone knows that cigarettes are one of the reasons that cause serious diseases ranging from lung cancer, heart diseases to respiratory problems. WHO announced that each year 8 million people die while 1 million die due to inhalation of second-hand smoke worldwide, particularly in Vietnam has 40,000 people die each year due to the use of tobacco. Therefore, increasing the costs of cigarettes is the best way to address this condition. Raising the price of tobacco leads to a reduction in numerous people who use cigarettes every day, this would help alleviate the prevalence of these serious diseases. People's health will be improved, so lessen the burden on the healthcare system. For example, Singapore from a country has a number of people inhalation highly, but after 30 years of applying the policy about increasing the cost of tobacco and other principles, these days, Singapore has the lowest smoking rate in the world and the lowest rates of smoking-related diseases.
Another reason is that it might help increase the revenue for the state budget. Raising tobacco tax leads to retail prices increase. Thereby, mitigating numerous people smoking, particularly the young generation. Following the WHO announcement that applying a higher tax on cigarettes helps each country make huge financial, 141 billion dollars if each country increases the 7% tax. For example, in Ukraine (2007-2017), the pricing of tobacco rose 3 times, leading to revenue from tax increase 15 times. And is valuable for each country to allocate financial resources to other fields such as education, healthcare, technology,…
In conclusion, raising the taxes on tobacco is a good option for nationals to choose. It brings a lot of benefits from enhancing the quality of health of residents to making a large budget for the country to develop the economic.
