Although there are a lot of translation software available, learning a language could still be advantageous. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is true that despite the rising availability of translation platforms, it is still beneficial to learn a language. I strongly agree to this statement due to the ability to acquire a new culture and facilitate better conversations.
The first reason why people should learn a language is that they will gain a deeper insight into foreign cultures. As they acquire a new language, they will delve more into a culture they have not known before and cherish it by reading literary works in their original form or watching documentaries. For instance, a Vietnamese student proficient in Hindi will know that head shaking does not represent a "no" in India, and the gestures for "yes" do not always mean the same in different cultures and lifestyles. Consequently, mutual misunderstandings and cultural shock can be avoided, which allows people to adapt well in a new environment.
The second reason for my agreement is that language acquisition contributes to more effective communication. People can socialise better and more confident on the grounds that they know how to make a proper sentence or use a variety of words accurately. For example, a holiday-maker, when being proficient in French, tends to actively interact with local people about finding a way around or where to go, what to eat, thereby forging closer bonds with them. As a result, this will bring a memorable and longlasting experience in travelling. This experience will be diminished if they use translation platforms as it will only create a cold personal interaction.
To summarise, regardless of the rapid development of language translation software, learning a language will never be useless due to cultural exchange and communication enhancement in certain situations.
