In today’s modern society, some families also have three or four generations. And the advantages and disadvantages exist together. So what are the drawbacks and the benefits about living in a traditional family of three or four generations?
Firstly, it is about the drawbacks. You can see some families, both the previous generation and current generation living together usually in poverty. This is because the huge amount of people causing the electricity and water problem has become serious. And also the area problem is worrying because of the large number of members. And many problems such as food, vehicles or just living expenses are very serious. According to a statistic in 2023, 70% of the poor families both have 3 or 5 generations living together. Nowaday, that situation is still increasing.
In addition, big families often cannot control all the members in the family because it is too hard. So the adults cannot teach them and they will become spoiled. Because of the large number of people, they cannot control their children’s actions so the children can do anything they want. They will become drug addicted, violate the law or social evils because their parents cannot totally control and teach them.
On the other hand, living with 3 or 4 generations together can be a benefit. Although the house is not too big for everyone, they still feel very warm and safe when sitting with their friendly relatives. This helps relationships become prettier and harder. My aunt’s family is an example. Her family has 5 generations and everyone is always sitting near each other because of the huge number of the members, but they love and understand each other very much. Her family never gets into any argument or rivalry. It is the greatest family that I ever see.
More than that, families of 3 or 5 generations usually have a rich tradition. Old people will pass on invaluable cultural traditions to their offspring. They will teach new useful things and the offspring will learn unique cultural knowledge. That is also a way to protect and nurture the country's literature. In Vietnam, there are many big generation families that protect their old cultural traditions so the tradition will never be forgotten. It is very great, important, necessary and respectable.
In conclusion, living in a traditional family of three or four generations has both advantages and disadvantages. But we must respect it and never give up. Do not complain about it but live responsibly with everyone and love or respect others. It is the main thing that everyone should do.
