Some people say that the governments should pay for health care and education but others think that this is not the government's responsibility. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Some people argue that the government should subsidize healthcare and education, while others believe that it is not the government’s duty. This essay will explore both perspectives before giving my opinion

On the one hand, it is undeniable that subsidizing healthcare and education benefits both individuals and society as a whole. By ensuring free access to these services, the government can uphold fundamental human rights for all citizens regardless of socioeconomic status, including vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, the unemployed or the homeless. Moreover, this approach also contributes to the well-being of a country. For example, countries like Canada or Finland, where the government funds these sectors, generally have higher literacy rates and life expectancy. Such substantial investment in healthcare and education not only increases human capital but also strengthens the nation’s global standing.

On the other hand, it is often argued that fully covering costs of educational and medical services is impractical. Firstly, the policy would strain public finances, which ultimately triggers the imposition of increased taxes. This burden could disproportionately take a heavy toll on middle-income individuals who usually constitute the majority within the population, hence exacerbating inequality. Secondly, that universal access to healthcare and education at no cost are widely publicized leads to the surge in demand. This might result in inefficiencies, as seen in underfunded and mismanaged public systems in economically challenged regions. Such inefficiencies can degrade the quality of services, leading to overcrowded classrooms, longer waiting times for medical treatment, and outdated facilities.

In conclusion, despite some potential benefits of government financial support for healthcare and education, especially in promoting social equity and national development, I am of the opinion that the officials should not shoulder these responsibilities entirely. It is my recommendation that a balanced approach, where the government supports but does not fully fund these sectors, might be more effective and sustainable in the long run.

Explanation: Replacing "Some people argue" with "Some individuals contend" elevates the formality and specificity of the language, aligning better with academic style by using a more precise term for argumentation.

  2. "it is not the government’s duty" -> "it is not the government’s responsibility"
Explanation: The term "responsibility" is more formal and appropriate in an academic context than "duty," which can sound somewhat colloquial and less precise.

  3. "This essay will explore both perspectives before giving my opinion" -> "This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my opinion"

Explanation: "Basic" is a more precise term in this context, as it specifically refers to essential rights that are universally recognized, whereas "fundamental" can imply a deeper level of importance that may not be universally agreed upon.

  6. "the unemployed or the homeless" -> "those who are unemployed or homeless"
Explanation: Using "those who are" instead of "the" provides a more precise and formal way to refer to these groups, avoiding the definite article which can imply a fixed or universal characteristic that may not be accurate.

  7. "generally have higher literacy rates and life expectancy" -> "typically exhibit higher literacy rates and life expectancy"
Explanation: "Typically exhibit" is more precise and formal than "generally have," which is somewhat vague and less specific in an academic context.

  8. "fully covering costs" -> "completely covering the costs"
Explanation: Adding "the" before "costs" clarifies the reference and enhances the formality of the sentence, aligning better with academic style.

  9. "triggers the imposition of increased taxes" -> "leads to the imposition of increased taxes"
Explanation: "Leads to" is a more formal and causally appropriate verb than "triggers," which can imply a sudden or dramatic effect that may not be accurate in this context.

  10. "take a heavy toll" -> "have a significant impact"
Explanation: "Have a significant impact" is a more formal and precise expression than "take a heavy toll," which is somewhat colloquial and less specific.

  11. "at no cost" -> "at no expense"
Explanation: "At no expense" is a more formal and precise phrase than "at no cost," which is somewhat informal and less specific in this context.

  12. "It is my recommendation" -> "I recommend"
Explanation: "I recommend" is a more direct and formal way to express personal opinion in academic writing, avoiding the less formal "It is my recommendation."

These changes enhance the precision, formality, and clarity of the essay, aligning it more closely with academic writing standards.
