The chart below gives information about the increase in the population living in urban areas across different
global regions between 1990, 2000, and the prediction for 2040
The table delineates urban population percentages across diverse regions from 1990 to 2000, extending to
projected values for 2040.
The trajectory of urbanization is ascending globally, with pronounced increases particularly in Asia and
Africa. Initially, the worldwide urban population grew modestly from 38% to 41% from 1990 to 2000, and is
anticipated to surge markedly by 2040.
In 1990, nearly 75% of North America's population resided in urban areas, contrasted with Asia's 36% and
Africa's quarter. The following decade saw Asia's urban contingent expand by a substantial 4%, thus reducing
the difference with North America's relatively stable urban demographic, and while Africa had a smaller
increase of two percent.
The 2040 forecast suggests a significant shift; Asia's urban population is projected to ascend to 63%,
compared to 60% for Africa. North America's urbanization is expected to increase to 88%, maintaining its
lead among regions, which is also on an upward trend
