The bar chart illustrates the average daily minimum and maximum concentrations of sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) in four major cities—Los Angeles, Calcutta, Beijing, and Mexico City—during the year 2000.
Mexico City recorded the highest pollution levels for both SO₂ and N₂O, whereas Los Angeles exhibited the lowest SO₂ concentrations. Beijing showed the greatest fluctuation in SO₂ levels, while having the lowest N₂O levels among the cities. Calcutta presented moderate pollution levels compared to the other cities.
Los Angeles experienced the lowest SO₂ levels among the cities, ranging from 2 µg/m³ to 10 µg/m³. In contrast, Calcutta reported significantly higher SO₂ concentrations, varying between 47 µg/m³ and 59 µg/m³. Beijing displayed considerable disparity in SO₂ levels, with a minimum of 25 µg/m³ and a maximum of 130 µg/m³, indicating substantial daily variations. Mexico City exhibited the highest SO₂ pollution, ranging from 80 µg/m³ to 200 µg/m³.
Regarding N₂O levels, Los Angeles showed relatively elevated concentrations, ranging from 39 µg/m³ to 104 µg/m³. Calcutta reported lower N₂O levels compared to Los Angeles, with values ranging from 30 µg/m³ to 52 µg/m³. Beijing had the lowest N₂O concentrations, varying between 14 µg/m³ and 54 µg/m³. Mexico City reported the highest N₂O levels, with values ranging from 113 µg/m³ to 207 µg/m³.
Mexico City stands out as the most polluted city among the four, showing elevated levels of both pollutants. Los Angeles, despite having the lowest SO₂ levels, exhibits relatively high N₂O concentrations compared to Calcutta and Beijing. Beijing, in terms of N₂O, demonstrates the best air quality among the cities, although its SO₂ levels indicate significant daily fluctuations. Calcutta's pollution levels fall between those of Los Angeles and Mexico City, with more stable readings compared to Beijing
