The provided bar chart compares how many English and Welsh families possessed and rented a house over nearly a century, from 1918 to 2011.

It is evident that there were two opposite trends in each category, with a considerable rise in ownerships and a gradual decline in rentals over the given period. In addition, there had been a dispersion in the figures for each above category since 1971.

77% of households rented an accommodation, which was the highest figure in the chart, compared to 23% of those who owned a house in 1918. At this point, while the former dropped steadily to 50%, the latter almost doubled also to 50% in 1971.

During the second period from 1971 onwards, despite growing continually to nearly 70% in 2001, the proportion of ownerships fell marginally by 5% at the end of the time frame. Regarding the remaining group, the figure for rentals underwent opposite changes, ending at 35%.
