The pie charts depict the age of workers employed in the UK public sector in two separate years, 2015 and 2020.
Overall, although the percentage of those in their 20s and 40s who were employed increased, employment for other age groups, especially those over 50 declined.
Taking the first look to the younger age groups, the percentage of employees aged under 21 was the lowest, at just 14% in 2015 and minimally dipped to 12% after five years while the number of workers aged under 30 increased due to a substantial rise in the proportion of 21 to 30 age group, soaring from 23% in 2015 to 33% in 2020. Similarly, the share of those over 40 surged from 19% in 2015 to 28% in 2020, albeit at a slower pace.
Other age brackets, however, witnessed considerable reduction in the same period of time. The portion of staff aged 31 to 40 nearly halved from 21% in 2015 to 11% in 2020, ranking the lowest position. A similar trend was seen in the oldest age group when the percentage of senior workers aged over 50 fell significantly from 23%, being the highest in 2015, to just 16% in 2020.
