the most important consideration when choosing any career or job is having a high income
to what extend do you agree or disagree ?

Some people believe that having a high income plays the most pivotal role when applying for a job. From my perspective, I strongly disagree with this point of view in terms of mental health and long-term career orientation.

Mental health is one of the extremely important aspects that people can prioritize over high income when choosing a job. Regarding financial burden, nowadays, with significant financial support from family, government, and other organizations, people especially the young are not too under pressure to find well-paid jobs to cover their basic living expenses. As a result, if they have to choose between an extremely stressful job and a low-stress job with a little lower income, people tend to choose the second one to balance between work and life. Next, hobbies and passion are key factors creating motivation to enhance people’s performance in work. If people constantly do jobs that they are not fond of, they will be prone to stress. As a result, to avoid falling into fatigue and stress, some people decide to pursue their dream jobs although these jobs don’t provide high income.

Secondly, when considering a job, long-term career orientation is also an essential factor that people can take precedence over high compensation. Entry-level positions often come with lower pay but provide valuable experience and potential for full-time roles so they considerably affect people’s job decisions. According to the survey in 2021 by the Vietnam Ministry of Labor, 93% of new graduates replied that they accepted their current jobs with lower income because they saw opportunities for growth and welfare policy that their companies will provide in the future. Moreover, job location is included in long-term orientation when finding a job because it involves other extra expenses and personal life. For example, many people after graduating from university decide to leave big cities with high salaries to work in their hometown where they can live near their family and save other unnecessary expenses such as house renting, parking, etc.

In conclusion, although some think that high income is the most important factor when finding a job, I firmly believe that there are many other factors that people can prioritize over high compensation, such as mental health and long-term orientation.
