In many societies in the world, the population is ageing rapidly and this is leading to an unsustainable increase in the cost of public healthcare. A nation’s population should pay for their healthcare provision in the future.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It has been suggested that in contemporary world, life expectancy of people in a lot of countries around the world is incredibly soaring, resulting to a drastic rise in terms of cost of public healthcare. Hence, it is claimed whether residents in a country ought to pay in order to be provided with healthcare in the future or not. While I agree that people must take responsibility for funding healthcare service, I believe that forcing individuals to pay may not be the most effective solution.

On the one hand, there is no doubt that paying for healthcare has a significant contribution to ensure financial sustainability. In other words, requiring everyone to pay for the healthcare expenses such as insurance, etc. can alleviate the strain on governmental budgets. Furthermore, paying for healthcare raises awareness of being more responsible to their well–being. To be specific, people can concern more about having a healthy lifestyle which may reduce the frequency of acute as well as chronic diseases.

On the other hand, it is worth acknowledging that the financial disparity is inevitable in this society. In particular, if individuals, especially the impoverished and the elderly, have to pay for the healthcare directly, they might struggle to afford it. Meanwhile people whose incomes are high and the wealthy may fund to the healthcare with neither effort nor trouble. What is more, the more preventable illnesses increase as people cannot afford the medical care, the higher healthcare is likely to cost. Thus, the untreated health problems may be more severe and, eventually, an extensive, costly cure is obligatory.

In conclusion, even though healthcare payment is essential for people, there are some elements prove that it is not entirely helpful to everyone. If there should be a combination of personal contributions and governmental supports, we will surely affirm that healthcare remains both sustainable and equitable.
