Sometimes, tourists may damage tourist sites. Explain what some of the negative effects may be. Suggest some solutions to this problem.
In recent years, travel has been one of the most prevalent fields of service with remarkable development. However, this drags out many serious effects upon the destinations. In this essay, I will discuss some of its consequences and the measures that could be suggested to alleviate these problems.
To begin with, there are a number of adverse impacts that can be caused by tourism. Firstly, tourists may misbehave when they are visiting tourist sites. Therefore, it can spoil the beauty of the destination and damage its environment. For instance, at Hoan Kiem Lake, which is one of the most tourist hotspots of Vietnam, sometimes there are visitors dropping their litters such as bottles, cans, … anywhere they come across. It not only makes the destination look dirty and unattractive, but also poses a serious threat to the environment since the process of waste disposal is a contributor to excess gases entering the atmosphere and causing air pollution. Additionally, tourism can carry the risk of culture erosion. Nowadays, there are a number of countries that have disneyfied their tourist sites to attract more visitors, leading to the exploitation of culture symbols and practices for commercial gain. Although it can be economically beneficial because of the increasing number of visitors and the amount of money spent in that area, the country may have to face the risk of losing their cultural authenticity since they prioritise the tourism profits over cultural preservation.
While the impact of tourism is detrimental, there are some solutions that can be used to deal with these problems mentioned above. First of all, the government should introduce regulations to clamp down on certain behaviours such as giving severe fines to tourists dropping their litter on the street or public space and destroying the environment of visitor attractions. Besides, the government and local authorities should collaborate with each other to raise public awareness of the importance of national identity and culture preservation by incorporating cultural heritage preservation into school curricula or organising exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events that focus on heritage preservation. Through education and engagement, tourists would be inspired to appreciate and respect the culture of destinations they visit, fostering a more harmonious relationship between tourism and the host communities.
In conclusion, despite its positive influence, the growth of tourism brings about many significant adverse impacts on the destinations such as environmental degradation and culture erosion. However, the consequences of these problems can be mitigated by stricter laws and raising public awareness of culture preservation.
